Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu was established in 1995 and officially gazetted in 1996. Our Wharekura (secondary component) was gazetted in 2016.
We are a natural development of Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu. Together with the vision of Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu, the Tertiary component, it offers an educational philosophy ‘Mai te kōpu o te whaea ki te kōpu o Papatuānuku. From the womb to the tomb.’
Our kura is distinctive from mainstream schools because of our philosophies, principles and practices. We are committed to the preservation and maintenance of the Māori language, a taonga of guaranteed protection under the Crown.
The whānau of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu work to provide a well-balanced curriculum focused on supporting and guiding tamariki in developing and strengthening their individual faculties, abilities, and social skills.
The Kura follows ‘Te Aho Matua’ and identifies the interests and unique skills that all tamariki have and will work alongside whānau and tamariki to further enhance their interests and skills.
(the human essence), affirms the nature of the child as a human being with spiritual, physical and emotional requirements.
(language), deals with language policy and how the schools can ‘best advance the language learning of their children’.
(people), focuses on ‘the social agencies which influence the development of children, in short, all those people with whom they interact as they make sense of their world and find their rightful place within it’.
(the world), deals with ‘the world which surrounds Tauira and about which there are fundamental truths which affect their lives’.
(circumstances of learning), ‘provides for every aspect of good learning which the whānau feel is important for their children, as well as the requirements of the national curriculum’.
(essential values), ‘focuses on what the outcome might be for the children who graduate from Kura Kaupapa Māori’ and ‘defines the characteristics which Kura Kaupapa Māori aim to develop in their children’.
