Te Kōhanga Reo o
Te Wānanga Whare Tapere o Takitimu

Established on the 10th June 1991 as a home-based Kōhanga Reo, in the home of Heke Huata and Matua Hook. After several weeks of renovations, painting, clearing, cleaning to ensure the centre was safe in September 1991 the kōhanga was moved into the premises at 706 Albert Street, Hastings.
The shared philosophy of “Whare Tapere” and “womb to tomb” learning forms the basis of everything that we do.
Ko te Reo kia Tika – Ko te Reo kia Rere – Ko te Reo kia Māori.
Let the language be used correctly, profusely, be Māori in all facets

This visions statement refers to the transmission of Te Reo me ngā tikanga Māori, by kaumatua and whānau – to mokopuna and whānau, so that it is retained for future generations. This is achieved through our 4 pou (key values) which are:

  • Ko te reo Māori anake i roto i te kōhanga reo mo ake tonu atu
  • Kei te whānau te tikanga arā ngä whakahaere, ngā whakanekeneke me ngā tikanga
  • Kia tika, kia pono
  • Te Whaioranga o te mokopuna me te whānau
